The Meaning of Life
by Tarnos
Why are we here? What is my purpose? What is the meaning of life?
These are questions that everyone has asked now and again. In this
paper I will answer them all.
When I was a young scribe I would spend my nights in solitude,
reading tomes of knowledge and tales of fantasy by the window of my
little room. The only light came via the grace of the pale moon. One
night I spotted some townsfolk walking slowly though a field. I set my
book down and began watching them. It was a man and a woman,
they seemed to enjoy each others company. Holding hands, walking
close, I could see smiles on both their faces. Although I was too far to
hear them, their body movements indicated that they were laughing
regularly. This made me wonder. Why were they so happy? They will
most likely spend their lives toiling just to survive. Both myself and
my friend will graduate and advance to much better things. They
would be lucky if they lived to an old age. I looked at them and then
at the moon and realized that there must be a reason why we are here.
Placing both rank and position aside we are all mortals that were born
and will die. So why were we created. I toiled with this question
throughout the rest of my schooling. After I graduated and entered the
Mage Guild I discovered the answer. We are here to accomplish our
purpose. But what is our purpose, more specifically what is my
purpose? I walked aimlessly though Sable and a purpose presented
itself. My purpose is to question and write. How do I know that this is
my purpose? This is a question that many people ask themselves, yet
they do not hear their own answers. Discovering your purpose has
nothing do to with your mind and all do to with your heart. If I used
my mind I would have never tolerated the persecution that followed
me. If what you do seems more like a chore than anything else then
you should reconsider what you are doing. Unfortunately, I cannot
help anyone find their purpose, no one can. All I can say is that if you
would die for it then you know that it is your purpose. So what is the
meaning of life? If we are here to accomplish a purpose then it would
stand to reason that the meaning of life is to accomplish our purpose?
If the purpose of a man was to build a church to his god, yet he did
not, is his life meaningless? Perhaps, yet this leads to a rather
disturbing conclusion. Each of us has a different purpose, varying in
difficulty, one persons purpose may be to simply procreate, another
may need to build and empire. Obviously there is something wrong
here. Perhaps the man who was meant to build an empire only
managed to build a kingdom, yet it was a perfect kingdom. Is his life
still meaningless? I do not think so. Then, if the meaning of life is not
to accomplish our purpose what is it? Oddly, it is a very simple
concept. It dawned upon me as I danced with a young magi friend in
the fountain as the stars shone and faded to greet the sun. The meaning
of life is fun. If the man whose purpose was to build a cathedral had
no fun how would he reflect upon his life when he was dying. Granted
his purpose was complete, yet even he must realize that time will lay it
waste. He experienced no joy, thus his life was meaningless. An
animated pile of rocks could also build a cathedral, yet it is lifeless.
There is no doubt that there are those among you that question my
conclusion. By fun I am not using an absolute term. One person may
find killing children fun, another might consider rps fun. Its all in the
eye of the beholder. But what ever you do, whether you serve Set or
Vishnu, always remember to have fun. For if you have fun you will
improve every aspect of your life which will ultimately help you
accomplish your purpose. If someone says that they think that pure
unadulterated sex is fun, yet they cannot indulge themselves because
they follow Erosia, all I can say is reexamine how you are living your
life in comparison to how you want to live your life. Of course, there
will be those that like promiscuity yet deprive themselves. The only
reason they do this is because they get more out of celibacy. Others go
against their beliefs as a trial. Although they are doing something
which they do not want, it is only done for something that they do
want.
I will refrain from giving more examples and revert back to the main
point. Just have fun and enjoy your life. That is the meaning of life.
